Description
This study investigates the use of epistemic modal verbs in TED Talks about technology through a specialized mini-corpus of 101 talks (approximately 177,000 words) compiled from TED’s official platforms. The research examines both the frequency and pragmatic functions of nine modal verbs (can, could, may, might, must, will, would, should, and ought to). Using Sketch Engine tools for frequency counts, concordance lines, and collocational analysis, the findings reveal three major functional groups: possibility and certainty (e.g., can, could, may, might), necessity and prediction (e.g., must, will, would), and recommendation and advisability (e.g., should, ought to). Results show that can and will dominate the discourse, highlighting narratives of technological capability and confident projection, while could and might express speculation and visionary potential. Should emerges as the main directive modal for establishing norms, whereas ought to is entirely absent, reflecting TED’s accessible and audience-friendly rhetorical style. The study concludes that modality in this genre functions as a grammatical resource and a persuasive tool for balancing certainty, possibility, and ethical guidance. These insights contribute to corpus-based studies of spoken discourse, shed light on rhetorical strategies in science and technology communication, and offer pedagogical implications for teaching modality in English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
