ChatGPT has shown promise in language learning, but its effects on cognitive load during listening remain underexplored. Based on Cognitive Load Theory (Sweller, 1988), mixed-methods study investigated the effects of ChatGPT-assisted pre-listening activities on listening comprehension and cognitive load among 38 non-English majors at Saigon University. A one-group quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design was employed, followed by a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. After an eight-week intervention (vocabulary explanations, listening summaries, and prediction questions), their listening improved significantly (M = 11.68 vs. 16.45; t(37) = −7.856, p < .001). While questionnaire findings showed reduced extraneous cognitive load (M = 4.34, SD = 0.62), appropriate intrinsic cognitive load (M = 4.03, SD = 0.69), and improved germane cognitive load (M = 4.26, SD = 0.63), thematic analysis revealed improved listening strategies, greater confidence, and reduced listening anxiety. The findings suggest that ChatGPT-assisted pre-listening activities can develop listening comprehension and support cognitive load management.
