Description
This paper evaluates how ChatGPT can influence the representation of arguments in IELTS Writing Task 2 by conducting an exploratory case study of an intermediate-English-level student in an online course of IELTS preparation taught by a private tutor. This study employed a qualitative research design, including a case study approach with essay analysis and a semi-structured interview, to investigate the impact of ChatGPT on an intermediate English level student's argumentative thinking process. The participants' IELTS scores, as assessed by an independent examiner and reported in this study, provided an overview of the impact of ChatGPT on argumentative writing ability. The study's rigor was stimulated by various information, detailed analysis of the participants' thoughts, and transparency. Descriptive statistics were additionally presented to complement the qualitative analysis. The findings indicated that ChatGPT enhances an intermediate-level English learner's argumentative thinking skills, increasing their IELTS writing score to Band 6.5, improving logical arrangement, word usage, grammatical structure, and retaining independent argument evaluation.
