Emotions are universal, but the way they are conceptualized and expressed through metaphor varies significantly across languages and cultures. This study investigates how emotional metaphors embedded in the Vietnamese literary classic Truyện Kiều are rendered in English and Japanese translations and explores how these metaphors can be meaningfully integrated into language classrooms to promote intercultural understanding and sustainable language learning. Grounded in Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the research adopts a qualitative, text-based comparative approach, identifying metaphorical expressions of core emotions such as love, sorrow, despair, and longing in the Vietnamese text and examining their translated counterparts in English and Japanese. This allows for the analysis of how emotional imagery is preserved, adapted, or reshaped across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Findings reveal not only linguistic and conceptual shifts but also divergent cultural attitudes toward emotion, which carry implications for both translation and language pedagogy. The study argues that teaching emotional metaphors through literary texts offers a powerful, culturally rich pathway for developing metaphor awareness, empathy, and deeper interpretive skills among learners. By bridging literary analysis and classroom application, the research contributes to both metaphor studies and innovative, sustainability-oriented language education.
