Description
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming translation education, creating new opportunities while raising pedagogical and ethical challenges. However, limited research has examined translation and interpreting students’ readiness alongside their perceptions of AI-related opportunities, risks, and ethical concerns. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study investigated these issues among undergraduate Translation and Interpreting students at a Vietnamese university specializing in foreign language education. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews to explain the survey findings. The results indicate that students are generally ready to adopt AI-assisted translation and recognize its value for learning and professional development. However, they also express concerns about overreliance on AI, reduced critical evaluation of AI-generated outputs, and academic integrity. Interview findings further reveal that many students lack the linguistic competence and AI literacy needed to use AI critically and responsibly. The study highlights the need to better prepare future translators for the responsible use of AI in both learning and professional practice.
