Description
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into language education represents a significant paradigm shift, facilitating the transition from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) toward English as a Second Language (ESL) contexts. Currently, an increasing number of students utilize AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini as writing assistants. This mixed-methods study, involving 125 engineering undergraduates and five lecturers at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, investigates AI’s impact on academic writing development through data collected via Likert-scale surveys and qualitative open-ended questions. The research explores two primary dimensions: pedagogical opportunities, including lexical development, idea generation, and self-regulated learning, and ethical challenges, specifically cognitive over-reliance and the potential erosion of critical thinking. Findings suggest that while AI is an invaluable tool, its integration must be carefully managed to complement rather than undermine core writing proficiency. The study offers implications for educators and policymakers seeking sustainable, ESL-oriented, AI-integrated curricula.
