In recent years, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT in language learning has become more and more popular. In particular, in many universities, using ChatGPT is one of the most effective ways to help students improve their essay writing. This study is conducted at the Faculty of Foreign Languages (FFL) of the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City (IUH) to examine the perceptions of second-year students regarding the use of ChatGPT as a writing support tool in essay writing. This research used a mixed-methods approach, collecting data from 150 questionnaire respondents and 10 interview participants. The research shows that many students express that ChatGPT is an effective tool to support their essay writing. ChatGPT can help students generate more ideas, enhance vocabulary sources and organize their writing more logically. However, some students express concerns about reliance on AI, as they are discouraged from thinking independently . It can be concluded that ChatGPT not only contributes to improving the quality of essay writing but also supports students' self-study. When used appropriately, AI tools can help learners enhance their critical thinking and autonomy in the learning process.
