Description
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching has raised growing concerns about privacy and data governance. Although UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021) identifies these as key ethical principles, it provides limited guidance on how teachers can apply them in everyday classroom practice. This paper addresses this gap by operationalising privacy and data governance for English language teaching through a qualitative desk study. Relevant literature on AI ethics, educational technology, and language education is synthesised to identify key ethical concerns and translate them into classroom practice indicators. The paper proposes a set of literature-informed indicators that illustrate how teachers can address privacy and data governance when using AI in teaching, learning, and assessment. By connecting broad ethical principles with practical classroom decisions, the paper offers a conceptual framework that can support future research, teacher education, and the responsible use of AI in English language teaching.
