Description
With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), language learning has been greatly altered, especially in writing practice. Although the use of AI tools can be a useful aid to idea generation and linguistic accuracy, it also poses a threat to conventional ideas of authorship and brings forth serious ethical issues. The paper is a qualitative literature review focusing on the changing role of AI in language learning, the authorship of language learning, responsibility, and ethics. The review reveals the change of AI as the writing support tool to AI as the co-writer, and it suggests the implications of this change to academic integrity and agency of learners. Moreover, such critical issues of ethics as plagiarism, reliance of learners, favoritism, and privacy of data are discussed in the paper. Although the topic of AI-assisted writing gains more attention, the issue of responsibility in AI-generated writing is under-researched. This paper highlights the importance of better frameworks to establish authorship and responsibility in the case of writing AI-mediate and recommends more research on responsible AI use in language education.
