Description
Abstract
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming language education by enabling content generation, immediate feedback, and adaptive learning support. As a result, AI is increasingly viewed as a valuable tool for promoting personalized learning in higher education. This study investigates Vietnamese students’ perceptions of the role of AI in personalizing foreign language learning. Data were collected through an online survey of 177 students from the University of Transport Technology and the Banking Academy of Vietnam. The findings indicate that 92.7% of participants use AI for foreign language learning, while 92.1% believe that AI contributes to the personalization of their learning experience. Students particularly appreciate AI’s ability to provide level-appropriate learning materials, instant feedback, and support for autonomous learning. However, concerns were also raised regarding information accuracy, technological dependency, and the potential weakening of critical thinking skills. Overall, the results suggest that AI has considerable potential to enhance personalized learning in language education. They also highlight the need for pedagogically guided and responsible AI integration that complements, rather than replaces, the role of teachers.
