Description
This study investigates how AI-generated worksheets can enhance the autonomy of young Learners learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Conducted with 4 second-grade students (ages 7-8) at the A1 level, the project addresses linguistic demands and focuses on emotional factors such as anxiety and confidence in the first phase of language learning. With the adoption of a design-based approach, a series of worksheet sets targeting reading, vocabulary, grammar, and speaking skills is generated with the support of GenAI and then is modified by the teacher to ensure pedagogical suitability. The materials are generated based on principles such as scaffolding, task progression, and recycling and include clear instructions and answer keys for supporting self-study. The result shows that GenAI-generated materials, when modified carefully, may enhance learners’ engagement, provide repeated exposure to the target language, and reduce cognitive and emotional obstacles. It also points out that these materials support the gradual development of autonomy through the students’ personal pace and self-evaluation. These findings suggest that AI can be an effective tool in developing approachable, autonomy-oriented learning materials for young EFL contexts.
